In anticipation of the upcoming and third Alberta Sport Leadership AGM scheduled for June 24, 2025 at 1 pm MTN, we are seeking nominations for election to our Board of Directors. We have four positions to fill on our nine-person Board. Three positions for three years each are being elected as a result of the fulfillment of initial terms with the Alberta Sport Leadership Association as mandated by our bylaws regarding 1/3 of the original Board. One additional position for two years will be elected to complete a term which is open as a result of a resignation.

Overview

The Alberta Sport Leadership Association (ASLA) is seeking nominations to the Board of Directors for the Association. The main purpose of the ASLA is to “unite and advance Alberta’s sport sector”. The areas of focus include Coordination and Support of the Sport Sector; Advocacy to those outside the sector; and Sport Sector Engagement and Communication. We are currently seeking nominations for four Board of Directors positions from individuals who are passionate about the Sport Sector and who will help lead, develop and implement the ASLA’s operational and strategic plans.

The four (4) nominees must be willing to serve voluntarily on the Board for a minimum of three years: June 24, 2025 - 2028 AGM (the fourth position is for an initial period of 2 years ending at the 2027 AGM).

We are seeking nominees who:

  • are innovative, creative, and can offer new perspectives;

  • ideally possess skills in one or more of the following areas: Human Resources; Technology, Legal, Finance/Accounting, Non-profit Sector, Strategic Planning, Marketing, Sponsorship and Fund Raising, Government Relations;

  • are strong advocates of the values and benefits of Sport from the grass root level through to elite performance;

  • have familiarity with the key issues facing Sport in the Province including but limited to Sport Funding, Safe Sport Strategy, and Fairness and Safety in Sport legislation; and,

  • contribute, challenge and will help shape the future agenda of Sport in Alberta.

Skills required for ASLA Board

Our organization is transitioning from a startup phase where we operated with the efforts of only volunteer board members to incorporating paid staff into our operations and having the Board move toward being a governance board. We still need our board members to balance good board governance with some operations and administration skills.

We are looking for visionary, strategic and critical thinkers who are well networked in the province and ideally have previous board-related experience. We are also looking for persons who have strong administration, operations and ideally marketing and/or technology skills and could be available to support or pitch in on some of the operational tasks required to move the organization forward.

Timelines/Nomination Process

  • Expression of Interest/Nominations received by May 23, 2025

  • Review of Applications and Interviews as determined by the Nominations Committee. Any Interviews would be in the date range of June 1 – 8, 2025

  • Nomination Slate circulated to Sport Community by mid-June, 2025

  • Presentation of the recommended nominations at the Annual General Meeting planned for June 24, 2025

Contract Position for Alberta Sport Leadership Association reporting to the Board of Directors

Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) of the Alberta Sport Leadership Association serves as the chief administrative officer, responsible for leading the organization during its start-up stage to fulfill its mission of enhancing Alberta’s sport community by promoting the positive values and benefits of sport. The ED will collaborate to create a collective voice to address the variety of challenges faced by the sport community and provide strategic leadership within the sport community.

This dynamic and strategic leader will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s strategic plan and associated programs, member services, operational and board policy development and other initiatives to enhance the success and sustainability of organized sport across Alberta.

The ED will be responsible for the organization's day-to-day operations, ensuring alignment with the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors, and will act as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the association. This role will lead ASLA in a manner that aligns with and advances the organization’s Vision, Mission, Values and Goals as defined by its Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operations and Organizational Administration  

  • Ensure effective day-to-day operations, including strategic planning, legal compliance, and human resources management.

  • Assume responsibility for maintaining the fiscal integrity of ASLA.

  • Support and development of operational and board policy 

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration between the Board of Directors and staff. 

  • Lead the development, implementation and reporting of the association’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with its mission and vision. 

2. Financial Management

    • Assume responsibility for maintaining the fiscal integrity of ASLA.

    • Develop, oversee, and manage the annual budget to ensure fiscal responsibility, compliance with funding agreements, and sustainability.

    • Identify and pursue revenue generation and funding opportunities, including grants, sponsorships, and partnerships.

    • Manage the organization’s finances according to the approved budget and authorize expenditures within the delegated authority approved by the board.

    • Support financial operations, ensuring efficient bookkeeping, record-keeping, and reporting processes are in place and are compliant with relevant taxation and legislative requirements.

    • Identify and assess risks to the organization’s personnel, assets, finances, reputation, and image, and implement measures to mitigate these risks.

3. Partner and Government Relations

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, corporate partners, and community organizations.

  • Provide support for the Safe Sport initiative.

  • Represent the association in discussions with policymakers to advocate for sport development and support the organized sport community.

4. Member Relations, Advocacy, and Support

  • Serve as an ambassador and key point of contact for Alberta’s PSOs, MSOs and Alberta Sport Councils, fostering collaboration and communication.

  • Advocate for the needs and interests of the sporting community to stakeholders and the public.

  • Provide resources, tools, and support to strengthen member organizations.

5. Marketing and Communications

  • Develop and execute marketing campaigns to enhance the association’s visibility and brand.

  • Develop and manage ongoing stakeholder and member communication strategies, including information releases and social media engagement.

  • Maintain and evolve the website and other digital properties to increase the profile of the organization and engagement of stakeholders.

6. Public and Media Relations

  • Collaborate with the Chair to serve as the public face and spokesperson, and public/media relations representative, promoting its mission and activities and strengthening its profile.

  • Implement and maintain a responsive system for promptly addressing member inquiries and crisis communications.

7. Event Management

  • Oversee the planning and execution of education, training, and networking events for PSOs.

  • Ensure events align with the association’s goals and deliver value to members.

8. Reporting

  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to funding partners, government bodies, members, and the Board of Directors.

  • Provide regular updates on organizational performance, strategic initiatives, and financial health.

There is an expectation that you will be available for travel commitments to attend meetings, presentations, training sessions, and program initiatives that may fall outside of regular work hours. There may also be additional work requested of you that is outside the position description but falls within the overall operations of the ASLA.


Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Sport Management, or a related field. A master’s degree is an asset.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role, preferably within the sport, nonprofit, or government sectors.

  • Proven track record in strategy development, financial management, advocacy, media and stakeholder relations.

  • Experience working with or supporting PSOs is highly desirable.


Skills and Competencies

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.

  • Expertise in financial planning, budgeting, and fund development.

  • Knowledge of Alberta’s sport landscape and PSO challenges.

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans.


Compensation

  • The contract will run until April 2027 and will be reviewed semiannually, with the possibility of extension beyond 2027.

  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and education.
