ALBERTA SPORT LEADERSHIP ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES SAFE AND WELCOMING SPORT PROGRAM WITH FUNDING FROM SPAR

The Alberta Sport Leadership Association (ASLA) is pleased to announce a three-year pilot project to support the establishment of a Safe and Welcoming Sport Program for Alberta, with funding support from the Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Branch (SPAR).

A key component of this will be the inclusion of an independent third-party mechanism (ITPM) to address complaints related to maltreatment in sport, specifically in the context of Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) funded by the Government of Alberta.

The Safe and Welcoming Sport pilot project aligns with ASLA’s 2024-2026 Strategic Plan titled “Advancing Alberta’s Sport Sector,” which was previewed at the organization’s AGM on June 25th, 2024. In addition to the provision of the ITPM service to the provincial sport community, the project will focus on developing resources, education, and training aimed at fostering Safe and Welcoming Sport, and supporting the PSOs in identifying and addressing maltreatment and supporting mental health.

To initiate, develop and launch the pilot project and provide support to ASLA, Scott Hayes from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport has been seconded to act as the Safe and Welcoming Sport Program Manager.  As this program is developed, Hayes will be leading the engagement of the PSOs over the coming months to better understand how we build an Alberta relevant program.

Founded in April 2022, the ASLA (Alberta Sport Leadership) is a non-profit entity with the mission of enhancing Alberta’s sport community by promoting the positive values and benefits of sport; acting as a collective voice to address the variety of challenges faced by the sport community; and providing strategic leadership within the sport community.
